Al Gurewitz founded Mill Valley Insurance to offer comprehensive business insurance services to all types of Bay Area businesses in 1983. Al’s personal interests were in the arts, especially music. As a young man, Al frequented the Fillmore and Broadway districts and made friends with many of the business owners involved in the burgeoning “counter-culture” of San Francisco. Ultimately, Al befriended Bill Graham and other San Francisco music heavyweights.
When Al started Mill Valley Insurance, he began to design insurance programs for night clubs and restaurants, many of which are now legendary. That appreciation for the restaurants and nightlife, which were so important to the culture of San Francisco, continues today. Ron Gurewitz, Al’s son and President of Mill Valley Insurance, is still an avid bassist. Ron’s years as a working musician in the Bay Area gives him a rare and valuable perspective on the business he insures. Derek Andros, Vice President and Co-owner, is an aficionado of the jazz guitar, as well. Derek’s son, Kris, representing Mill Valley’s third generation, now insures many of the venues that he frequents as a music fan.
